Two Surprising events in Winchester this weekend

If you’re looking for literary events in the week coming, Winchester has a feast on for you! There are actually more than two but I’m going to be biased and promote my two first.

Launch of ‘Guided by Surprise’ – 5pm, Saturday 29th Oct

Oxfam Bookshop, Parchment Street; Free (and free WINE!)

This anthology has been put together by writers associated with Hyde, in aid of Oxfam’s ‘Teach a Teacher’ campaign. Saturday evening is the grand launch: a chance to drink some wine and hear us reading from the book. It’s a mere £5 and all profits go to Oxfam. I promise we won’t read for too long either.

The anthology features nearly 50 pages of poetry, from 5 poets including myself,  Stephen Boyce, Richard Stillman, Hugh Greasley, and Steve Scholey; and 70 pages of fiction from Tim Stevenson, Jon Courtenay Grimwood, Paul Howard Davies, Jake Wallis Simons,  David Owen, and Hanna Nina Jameson. If you’d like one but can’t make it there, I’ll have copies at my workshops in November/December, or you can buy one from the Hyde Tavern.

Map Plot Plunder Possession: 6pm-midnight, Monday 31st Oct,

Theatre Royal , £10

‘Map Plot’ is the flagship event of the 10 Days arts festival that started yesterday. It’s a chance to see the Theatre as never before or again: a trip around the whole building, including backstage and onstage, where you will see, hear and touch art installations, contact dancers, singers, musicians, and – writers! I think it’s going to be a very interesting event, so please come along.

I will be part of the Flash Writing team: writing LIVE and BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES in response to prompts given by you the audience; creating your very own unique work of literature to take away! I hope you’ll come and watch us sweat: at our run through some really good work was being written, so maybe you’ll be able to say… ‘I was there!’

Tickets from the Theatre box office.

And the other two : two chances to perform your poetry

1. Tonight – Thursday 27th: Forte Tea Rooms from 7.30

2. On Wednesday 2nd November: Poetry Platform at the Railway, from 8.30.
