‘Impressions’ Poetry Workshop at the Jane Austen House

It’s always a pleasure to work in a new place, and I’m especially excited about this one: getting to teach at the home of one of the language’s greatest writers is a huge privilege. The Jane Austen House Museum is where Austen revised  Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey, and where she wrote all of Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. What better place could there be to spend a day writing!

In 2013 the museum is celebrating 200 years of Pride and Prejudice.  One facet of this is the ‘Impressions’ exhibition, which features artworks by seven Hampshire artists, all responding to Pride and Prejudice in a range of forms and media. The artworks will be on display in the house itself, and I am delighted to have been asked to run a workshop responding to the exhibition.

So, if you come along, I’ll be taking you on a poetry journey around the house, exploring your own ‘Impressions’ of the art and the building, and then helping you to express them in poetry. I’ve seen sneak previews of the work the artists are promising, and I can confidently say that will be varied and interesting, and ripe for writing about – especially in the context of the house.

So I hope you will join me in these beautiful, evocative surroundings, for a day of poetry inspiration.
